Description

We purchased this from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 1990.
The original limestone plaque, carved in a gabled architectural design and bearing typical Jewish symbols represents a wall in a synagogue. The main element of the opposition is the imposing central door flanked by two lateral doorways, in front of which stand two menorahs.
The base of the plaque is decorated with a frieze of three birds, an example of the fairly common use of animal decoration in Jewish religious art.
