    Description

Group of six (6) vintage mother-of-pearl shell hand-drilled and hand carved buttons, known as
    tany
, from northern Pakistan and Kohistan.
No two are the same; each has a distinctive pattern.
The mother-of-pearl shines on the fronts; the backs are natural shell.  They have a good size and thickness which made them practical for fastening coats and jackets (please see measurements in photos), which is how they are used traditionally.
They also look sensational on a necklace, or as a fastener for a purse.
Five of these are in clean, used condition.
One button (see photos) is an outlier: The shell button with a cluster of old white-heart red glass beads at the center. It has a more pronounced curve and looks newer (?), though the white-heart beads are quite vintage.
    Total weight: 60.7 grams
