Description
Offered here is a fine pair of 18th century Chinese blue-and-white export porcelain pieces: a plate (8.25" diameter) and a shallow soup bowl (8" diameter). Each is decorated with a picture of a peaceful rural scene and a bridge. The previous owner told me the chop mark reads in Chinese "Great Ming" and in Japanese "Great Japan" with the date 1718. I have no way to verify these assertions.Werner Speiser's book THE ART OF CHINA reports that at the beginning of the 1700's, a few artists from a village in Canton, China, moved to Yokosuka, Japan, because their kilns in China had been destroyed. There they continued manufacturing for 33 years to make Canton-style porcelain. Their plates, made from Japanese porcelain, had a secret ingredient: broken pieces of porcelain from China, which makes them unique. Their products were sent from Japan to China for distribution there, so they became part of "Blue and White Export, from China."
I ship with care to the UNITED STATES ONLY. Porcelain will be double-boxed for greater protection.
