Fine Antique English 18K Gold & Sterling Silver Snuff Trinket Box Animo Et Fide
Presented is an extremely well made 18 karat gold and sterling silver snuff or trinket box in a cylindrical form with a precisely closing lid. We believe the lid was originally the case from an antique European gold pocket watch. The box itself is made of sterling silver with a gold wash. The top of the box bears a colorful crest of the lion passant standing on a crown of nobility (worn by nobles, princes and princesses), over the latin motto: "Animo Et Fide", which, in English, translates to "courageous and faithful". You have probably heard this expression, as it resonates with many, and has been used as a military pledge, in countries' coats of arms, and in family crests for centuries!
The silver cylinder, or box itself has no marks. The original silver hallmarks were undoubtedly stamped into the original lid. We have tested the silver ourselves and we guaranteed it to be of sterling silver purity. The gold lid is hallmarked. The inside of the lid is marked with the gold watch's sponsor mark that is likely by George Richard Baldock of London dating to very early 1900's. There is an imprinted "T", the date letter for gold items produced in 1894, in London England. There is also the number "18" indicating 18 karat gold. We have tested the cover also, and it tests for and is guaranteed to be of 18 karat gold purity.
This piece is in great condition and the designs are crisp. There is a strip of blue enamel missing from the ribbon on the top and the exterior gold wash is worn, as you can see in the photographs.
The box measures 1 1/2 inches tall with a 2 inch diameter.
Weight: 89.6 grams (3.16 ounces)
Note: The 18 karat gold cover alone weighs between 13 to 17 grams.
