In 1988, E-MU stunned the music world with the introduction of the Proteus/1, a one rack unit band-in-a-box. From Proteus/1 through Ultra Proteus and Morpheus, this E-MU product family exists in nearly every credible home, project and pro studio facility. And now you can have the sounds of the first three Proteus modules, all in one single expansion ROM for your Proteus-platform module.
E-MU presents the 16 MB Protozoa expansion ROM – the ultimate sound compilation containing presets from the ground-breaking Proteus sound modules, all optimized for your Proteus-platform module’s advanced synthesis and filter architecture.
The Protozoa 16 MB expansion ROM offers you the world-class presets from the original Proteus/1 (Pop/ Rock), Proteus/2 (Orchestral) and Proteus/3 (World) sound modules that you’ve heard on thousands of hits over the past decade. E-MU’s sound designers have optimized these timeless sounds for your Proteus-platform module’s powerful architecture, giving you polyphony, filters and synthesis capabilities that were impossible even a few years ago. Our sound designers even developed a bonus bank with layered sounds from all three modules for hybrid combinations unlike anything you’ve heard before. The Protozoa 16 MB expansion ROM proves that some things do get better with age.
The primary goal when designing the Protozoa ROM set was to faithfully reproduce the original presets of the Proteus 1/2/3 sound modules. Sound Banks 1, 2, and 3 contain the “greatest hits” presets from the Proteus module of the same number. Because the original Proteus modules did not have the luxury of dynamic filters, banks 1-3 in this set are not programmed with any filter sweeps. The filters are used, like the Tone parameter on the Proteus Series, to brighten and darken the sound according to key velocity. Banks 1-3 have a very slight amount of reverb added. The front panel FX A knob adjusts the reverb amount. Reverb can be removed from all presets by using the Master Effects control. Bank 0 contains all new presets using Instruments from all three sound sets. For this all new bank, our sound designers were given free reign to use any of the features that the Proteus 2000 has to offer. Ten new General MIDI drum Instruments were added as well as 4 new GM Presets in Bank 0. You’ll notice that there are 4 GM “No Hats” Instruments. This was done so that the Hi-Hats can be assigned to a separate layer. With Solo Mode on, the Closed Hi-Hat will “choke off” the Open Hi-Hat. You can also use knob D to control Hi-Hat volumes relative to the rest of the kit.
