    Description

    Description
Rare. Over 170-year-old antique paper treasure.
Offered for sale is an early Victorian era advertising card, circa 1850s, known as a "porcelain" or "carte porcelaine."
The subtle iridescent colors of these trade cards, lithographed on porcelain-coated card paper, were created by metallic dust which was applied when the glue-based printing ink was still wet. When the hazardous nature of the practice (it is said that the dust contained mercury) was realized in the 1860s, production ceased. The production of these cards was limited to Belgium, most cards being printed in Bruges or Ghent.
This beautiful card advertises Lievin Vandercruyssen, a coach builder of the King of Belgium.
