Antique Chinese Ko-Akae 17C Porcelain Ming Transitional Cockerel Verte Plate
    Description
A very nicely decorated plate. A late Ming Ko-Akae porcelain dish, Tianqi or Chongzhen Period 1621 – 1644.
Painted with Roosters/cockerels which seems to be engaged in a fight. Above them is a butterfly in flight and two small insects on the left and right. The whole scene is situated in a floral garden/landscape scene. Overglaze enamels.
The motif of cockerels was popular on ko-akae and kosotmetsuke. The painting is rather informal, done with the quick balanced strokes that characterise these wares ordered for the Japanese market.

    Symbolism:
    Cockerel
The cockerel or rooster is an honored creature in China. It is one of the twelve animals forming the Chinese zodiac. Out of reverence, the cockerel in contrast to hens, was not killed for meat. Cockerels are valued for working hard to eat up insect pests. They are seen as fierce-some, wise, courageous, benevolent and loyal.
    Butterfly
Butterfly - joy and conjugal felicity. Butterfly is pronounced in homonym with the word die which means a 80 years old. Two butterflies together is meant a wish of "longevity". "Die" is also pronounced similar to another word which means to "pile up" or "repeat" - and thus given the meaning "many".
