    Details & Specifications
19th C. Pair of Chinese Export Canton Famille Rose 'Bird & Butterfly' Celadon Side Plates, 6.5" Inches
These Canton Famille Rose side plates in the 'Bird & Butterfly' pattern are decorated with roses, fruits, and other flowers, along with birds and butterflies on a celadon ground.
The plates themselves were probably made between 1840 and 1849. Daniel Nadler explains in his book, China to Order, "The introduction of wares with celadon glaze as a base for ornamentation for the foreign market seems to have occurred around the time of the Taiping Rebellion".
With the rise of the Taiping Rebellion in 1850, the kilns of Jingdezhen were destroyed.
He goes on to say, "According to this hypothesis, celadon was used  as a substitute for white blanks which were no longer available, for the Taipings had demolished Jingdezhen's kilns".
The birds and butterflies on these plates look very much like those that would be used extensively in the Rose Medallion, Rose Canton, and Rose Mandarin patterns in the second half of the 19th century.

    International Buyers
Shipping costs tend to be much higher than US shipping costs for items. Any item over is shipped registered and insured. Import duties, taxes, and charges (typically collected upon delivery or pickup) are the buyer's responsibility and are not included in the item price or shipping charges. Please check with your country's customs office prior to bidding/buying to determine what these additional costs will be. We claim the value of the package by the ending item price. It is against the law to claim any item as a gift to avoid customs fees. Please do not ask us to do so. International delivery can take up to three weeks and sometime as long as six to arrive, so please don't leave negative feedback because of a Post Office or Customs delay.
    Returns & Refund Policies
New items, Open Box items, and Used/Like New Condition items are eligible for return if authorized and approved by Room Tonic within 14 days after either (a) the close of each auction or (b) the date of purchase of an item sold on the ‘Buy It Now’ buying format. Buyer will be given a Return Merchandise Authorization number which must be labeled on the packaging of the item eligible for return. The approved item must be shipped back to Room Tonic within three (3) business days of the RMA being issued. Failure of Buyer to provide a tracking number to Room Tonic of the item being returned within this three-day return shipping window will forfeit their RMA and the approval for return and refund will be revoked. If item(s) are not received within the seven-day return window, the item(s) will not be accepted, and their delivery will be refused and directed to be sent back to sender. Any signs of wear, nicks, scratches, or chips that were not previously disclosed will result in the Full Refund being reduced to a Partial Refund and the amount to be refunded will be determined solely by Room Tonic at Room Tonic’s discretion based on the altered condition, wear, or damage to the returned item(s), and Room Tonic’s ability to resell the item(s). Items that are sold as Used, Vintage, or Antique are sold “as-is” and they are not eligible for return or refund. Please ask all questions prior to bidding.
